Asphalt Driveways

Driveways with asphalt as a construction material is popular across the world. Driveway is a type of small road usually in front of garages or leading to a private property or in case of estates, they usually connect the main road through a gate to the house. They may also connect a small group of houses or may be for other purposes. The popular materials for constructing driveways are asphalt, concrete, cobblestone etc. Asphalt driveways are one of the most popular types of driveways found across the world and is used because of their durable and cost effective nature.

Components

Asphalt driveways are composed of asphalt as the bonding material and other materials that act as the aggregate. The aggregate materials usually comprise of gravel, sand and other carbon related material. The resulting mixture contains carbon in the highest proportion and the other substances forming the rest of the mixture. The asphalt lends a dark color to the resulting mixture. The aggregate should not contain soil or other plastic materials. The base of the asphalt driveway should contain a foundation with gravel. This is because newer asphalt still retains a lot of hydrocarbon oils in it and on its own is sort of flexible when exposed to heat.

Proper Installation and Cost

Asphalt driveways turn out best when a lot of time is available for the contractor to work on it. In this case it should always be remembered that colder temperatures offer less time for the contractors to work upon the asphalt and the result could be an uneven and improperly built driveway. Thus summer and spring should be the ideal time to install asphalt driveways. Depth also matters as with increasing depth the time available to construct also increases.  Also in terms of the cost, asphalt is one of the most affordable materials available to construct a driveway. The cost for complete installation of the driveway per square inch can be lesser than £1 to about £4. Repair or resurfacing should cost much lesser than a complete installation. A do it yourself approach should not be attempted in asphalt driveways installation as it can be quite complex and simple mistakes could result in the whole project being ruined.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance is a must in asphalt driveways and whatever steps that you might take to protect them, they will get damaged eventually and it is usually a good idea to fix the damage immediately. Cracks can let in water and damage the driveway badly. Hence, a resurfacing should be done as soon as the driveway begins to show signs of wear and tear. Also a sloping surface during constructions helps the water to run off and not stagnate on the driveway.

Tips on Asphalt Driveways

It cannot be stressed upon more highly that asphalt driveways should be given proper time to cure before applying the sealant. Also the gravel foundation under the driveway can be of larger stones and be deep to maximize effectiveness of the base.
